A Summary of UN Handbook on Gender Training

In the topic, WHY GENDER MATTERS, METHOLOGY, the proper approaches to Peace Support Operations is captured clearly. Any personnel engaged in Peace Support Operations should be at home with them in order to achieve an effective result. There is a strong need for the personnel to understand the interconnecting strands that underlines the military, political, economic and social life of the community of the operations in order to improve relation with members.   Understanding that communities consist of different people with different needs and priorities will help the personnel to improve on the planning of responses thus facilitating overall achievement of mission target. In all,   an increased level of sustainable peace should be the target.Furthermore, the FOUR CASE STUDIES open up vistas on the need for enlightenment. The Iraq case study shows that in order to save life, there is the need to recognise women's roles and responsibilities in a crisis situation. Men alone could not have been assigned to distribute food items. Also the rights of the community of operations should be protected as seen in the Cambodian case study. Peacekeeping missions should avoid creating negative atmosphere in the host communities by laying down clear policies and practices based on respect for human rights. Similarly, for effective conditions for peace and stability to be created, no organisation should be overlooked. For instance, after 28 yrs of violence and ethnic conflict, Sudanese women came together to stop the violence through a peace conference which is a non-violent approach to inter-tribal conflict. This shows the fact that women's organisations are also key to establishing peace and should not be overlooked. The fourth case study throws more light on enhancing the people's ability to deal with crisis and rebuilding society. It goes further to state that women and men feel and participate in conflict differently.Their experiences have a role to play in post war era. F or instance in Colombia, many rural communities had a lot of examples wherein women were restricted to the houses, men did all the running around. The implication   is that in the case of eventual displacement to urban areas, the women survived more with their skills than men. The women turned their domestic skills into jobs.Note that during crises or wars, gender perspective must be applied to the Peace Support Operations. There is the need to understand what gender perspective does and does not involve in such Peace Support Operations. While women should not be focused on exclusively, there is need to look at the inequalities and differences between women and men. That will enable resources, which focus on women's peculiar needs, to be mapped out. Also the operation does not concern itself with treating women only as a vulnerable group. There is the need to note that any of the genders can be harmed. However, women need not be reduced to victims. Peacekeeping must consider the in equalities and differences between women and men thereby structuring resources to that effect. This will enable an easy check on overall impact of the intervention strategies.Again, the PSO should note that men and women differ in their thinking   and should not focus only on employment equity issues within organisations rather should recognises that equal opportunities for women within organisations is only one aspect of a concern for gender equality. A criticism to this is that there is no clear way of measuring the amount of attention given to women. It may be over done.In FILLING THE GAPS: A VIRTUAL DISCUSSION ON GENDER, PEACE AND SECURITY RESEARCH, ten key recommendations were made by   90 academics and research professional drawn from across various fields in Oct 2008, The dialogued for three weeks.Their recommendations bothered basically on identifying gaps in gender, peace and security research and efforts to fill up such lacunae through effective research methods and to ols. However, the group should clearly understand that there is often a wide gap between theories or research and practical life situations. While life is larger than logic, all efforts are always geared towards bridging that. There is a link between feminism, militarism and human right. It could be extrapolated from the laid out facts in the four treated topics. While every human being deserves his/her fundamental human rights and privileges, that of the women folk should not be viewed from any less spectrum at all. Military officials, who are often peacekeepers in conflict zones, should learn to uphold the human rights of member of their host communities with an eye not to look down on women in any bit.Cases have shown where women are receiving inhuman or less treatment from them.   Designed peace and reconstruction programmes must show that women are not just mere entities but participants in such communities.

History of Moulin Rouge

Carefree life, Fickleness and Joie de Vivre†¦ Those are the three words that could best sum up this unique period in the History of France. It was a rest between two wars, a period of transition between two centuries, during which the social barriers collapsed, when the industrial revolution gave hope of a better life for all, in a rich cultural profusion and that promised much fun. The middle-class mixed with the riffraff, the popular culture was enhanced in a contented disorder full of joy and vitality. In that atmosphere, which favored artistic creativity, literary circles appeared and disappeared according to people meetings, while painters and drawers got especially inspired by this joyful sometimes outrageous but full of fancy atmosphere that broke completely with the rigid classicism of that period. Moulin Rogue takes place in Montmarte (an area within the city of Paris). Crowning the Montmartre- based world of commercial entertainment was Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler’s landmark music hall, the Moulin Rouge. When the Moulin Rouge opened its door on the Place Blanche at the foot of Montmartre on the 6th of October 1889, all Paris turned out. Highbrow and lowbrow society alike mobbed the ‘Palace of Women’ before the paintwork was dry on its extravagantly decorated interior. The Moulin Rouge’s decor, by Montmartre painter Adolphe Willette, its exotic colour, form and the being became an overnight legend. Besides the immense dance hall complete with galleries to watch the dance floor and an orchestra mounted above the stage, there was a garden with another stage, cafe tables, cavorting monkeys and unstockinged prostitutes riding donkeys. Also in the garden, a giant elephant (gleaned when the Universal Exhibition of 1889 terminated, housed an Arabian themed club inside its body. Male clients entered via the elephant’s leg where a spiral staircase opened onto belly dancing performances, an orchestra and an opium den. Making a radical break with the century’s relentless class divisions, a microcosm of Parisian society rubbed shoulder in scandalous proximity. European royalty, ambassadors, politicians, industrialists and magistrates lummed it with celebrity courtesans, can-can girls and workers. The local Montmartre Bohemians and the cocottes and noctambules (prostitutes), pimps, madams and thieves who were their neighbors were also out in force. Within the Moulin’s velvet draped walls, the aromas of women’s scent, face powder, tobacco and beer mingled as promiscuously as the audience in a class of their own were the courtesans, a social phenomena that all but died out with the end of the Bell e Epoque and the beginning of World War 1. Though springing from the same working class as the prostitutes, the more celebrated courtesans were distinguished by the length and high-style of the relationships they formed (with, near exclusively, the elite of Europe). Like today’s film, stars and supermodels, were also coltishly observed by press and public. But, if the Moulin Rouge quickly established its reputation as the most exotic sex market in Paris, it also represented a kind of cultural and social revolution.

Battle Of The Beasts Essay Research Paper

Battle Of The Animals Essay, Research Paper In 1954, with nil but their originative heads, the Toho Movie company produced the first elephantine monster film. Japan s Godzilla was brought to life. In 1998, with nil but Lucas Arts particular effects, and a name which guaranteed a blockbuster, the Centropolis Movie Company produced the All American Godzilla Flick. U.S.A. has eventually found its ain Godzilla. But is this new animal better than the Asiatic one? Despite the technological progresss and successful advertisement, the U.S. Godzilla has truly no comparing to the Nipponese one. Cinema has changed a batch in 45 old ages. In the times of King Kong and Dracula, # 8221 ; chilling # 8221 ; had a really important significance. Nowadays we are excessively smart for that. To do a batch of money, one might state a scientific discipline fiction film needs to look existent. In this regard, the American film is far better. The American audiences want to see an exciting film. In this regard besides, the American film is better. The film is besides, in most respects, a better film so any which came out in Japan. It is non nevertheless, Godzilla. The American monster doesn t even look like Godzilla. The visual aspect of Japan s Godzilla is better. The American Godzilla leans frontward at the hips when he walks. He has triangular bony home bases and a thin pointy tail. His oral cavity is like an iguana s. The Nipponese Godzilla is non a lizard. He is a mutated animal unlike any other. His bony home bases are really flimsy growings that are all over the topographic point. Godzilla, who was meant to mean atomic holocaust, besides closely resembles a human. In this manner, we can see a character out of him, non merely another elephantine lizard. His eyes are both pointed forward like a human, he walks unsloped like a human, and he has long forearms like a human. Godzilla doesn T have graduated tables, he has large perpendicular channels in a leathery tegument. He has a broad stance, muscular legs, and an look that merely takes some peoples breath off. And his illustriousness goes far beyond his expressions ; you can besides see it in his bosom. The Nipponese Godzilla is better because he has a psyche. He is powerful, yet sometimes defeated. He is an unstoppable force of nature, but besides a warrior. Godzilla is a elephantine monster, but he is besides a character. His face has looks, and he has a batch of motive. Such minute nsters are about non-existent in American civilization besides a few. King Kong, Frankenstein, and Dracula are all successful because the monster made sense. If the audience can t experience regretful or understanding for an evil animal, the animal has non done its occupation. Today s American audiences do non hold monsters with psyches. Our monster films are about the people in the movies, non the monsters. For illustration, Alien, Predator, Jurassic Park, Jaws. They are large computerized props. The audience has no emotion towards them. When they are on the screen sometimes we might desire them off. The American Godzilla is a lizard, nil more, even if it looks realistic. Last, the Nipponese Godzilla is better in the regard that it does non look existent. No Godzilla film has of all time been 100 % realistic. The U.S.A. Godzilla movie is realistic. When an audience tickers it, they believe their eyes. When you watch a Nipponese Godzilla film you can appreciate the fact that it is a film. It neer one time seems existent. The audience can play over the eldritch scientific discipline and rubber suits in their heads. Nipponese Godzilla films aren t existent, they re fictious ; beyond existent. They are like we imagine when we read a book. Most of all nevertheless, Japan s Godzilla is fun to watch, America s is non. America s Godzilla is merely a cool lizard from the find channel. We have possibly to many particular effects. Ever since Jurassic Parks improbably realistic dinosaurs, we are non as excited by the awful lizards we see and read about. When something fabulous becomes existent, it is no longer every bit interesting as it was earlier. One of the best Godzilla films of all time made would hold to be Godzilla V. King Kong. The conflict between the big E and west monster. There are a batch of good scenes in it, including when King Kong shoves a large tree down Godzilla s pharynx, and he coughs it back up. At the terminal King Kong and Godzilla are contending when they all of a sudden fall over the side of a drop. They fall in H2O, and King Kong is seen swimming to shore, presumptively stating Godzilla is dead. But is he? Remember he can swim underwater! Godzilla International Relations and Security Network t an animate being. He isn t a lizard or a firedrake or a dinosaur or even a cat in a gum elastic costume. Godzilla is a universe broad film fable. Truly, Godzilla is excessively large to melt off. Godzilla is truly one of a sort.

Conflict and Stress in Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Conflict and Stress in Management - Essay Example Conflict and stress are two issues that can negatively affect the performance of an organization. Conflict occurs when two employees cannot agree on an issue (Collins & O'Rourke, 2009). This paper is a case study that involves two employees who cannot agree with each other on a production scheduling functions. Ralph is said to be proud since he has always handled the production scheduling in his head. However, the plant manager is looking to save on cost and increase the production efficiency. Kevin has a system that meets the manager’s needs. Ralph does not like the system since he wants to continue handling the scheduling as he has always done. He is at fault since he has refused to accept change in the organization. The issue, in this case, is that Ralph is not willing to accept change. He has been joined by other old workers who might feel that their positions are threatened by the changes being introduced. The best way to resolve this situation is to get Ralph to accept c hange. This can be achieved through effective communication. He should be sensitized about the need for such change. A compromising approach can be effective (Collins & O'Rourke, 2009). Ralph can be trained on how to use the computer systems. Both Kevin and Ralph can then be working together on the production schedule so that each one of them is partially satisfied. Conflict and stress cause poor performance in the organization. Therefore, managers should handle conflicts in the best way so as to avoid stress. In this case, the compromising approach can be effective.

Business and Social approaches to Social media Essay

Business and Social approaches to Social media - Essay Example (Bradley, and McDonald, 2011, pg. 203) The social media has had tremendous influence on the social lives of people as well as on how businesses are marketed. On this case study, I look at the implications of social media on the society and using some companies as case studies, I explore the ways in which businesses can successfully market themselves via social media. Implications of Social Media on Society More than a few students have been kicked out of school for collaborating on Twitter, hi5, Facebook, MySpace, and the like on assigned individual projects. It is no longer news that some individuals have missed out on employment opportunities due to inappropriate content or associations on their Linkedln or Facebook pages. Some teachers have also been requested to step down due to overtly sexual content within their social networks. (Qualman, 2010, pg. 38) However, it is not all bad as sometimes, social media can help in bringing families a little closer by enabling parents to unob trusively follow their kids’ lives. Most times in today’s busy life, parents and teenagers share time only around the dinner table, and then everyone goes about his or her own life. (Qualman, 2010, pg. ... dies, Justin Esch and Dave Lefkow, who over a few beers jokingly posed the question – â€Å"Would it not be great if there was a powder that made everything taste like bacon?† (Qualman, 2010, pg. 29) The beginning of their success was when Dave started MySpace profile dedicated to Bacon Salt. They then used data openly available on MySpace to seek out people who had mentioned bacon in their profiles and found over 35,000 such people. They began reaching out to such people to gauge their interest in Bacon Salt, and not only did they find interest, they started receiving orders even before they had a product yet. (Qualman, 2010, pg. 29) World of mouth took over from there, and as Dave describes it â€Å"It was one person telling another person, telling another person. It was amazing and scary at the time; we were not prepared for the onslaught.† The viral aspect of this experience branched into non-social media channels, and they even received a free endorsement fr om the Gotham Girls Roller Derby team. It is one thing to get buzz about one’s product but it is a completely different thing to sell it – and sell it they did. The spice that made everything taste like bacon incredibly sold 600,000 bottles in only six months. â€Å"We did not even have a product at the beginning; instead, we bought cheap spice bottles, printed out Bacon Salt logos and Scotch taped them onto the bottles†. (Qualman, 2010, pg. 29) The Bacon Salt product and brand was formed entirely using social media. Similar to JetBlue, Zappos, and Comcast, the founders of Bacon Salt started following what people were saying about their product and responding to them. They did other activities, but as Dave and Justin readily admitted, they wanted to keep some of their social media insights to themselves and

Advantages of Probation and Prison system Assignment - 2

Advantages of Probation and Prison system - Assignment Example It is traced back in Boston in the 1700s when the prisoners were taken home by John Augustus as an alternative to the issue of incarceration. Later on, Massachusetts authorized Boston to hire a probation officer. By the end of the ninetieth century, probation was widely practiced all over the world. Parole refers to the temporary or permanent release of a certain prisoner before completion of their prison sentences once they promise to be of good behavior. There are various differences between parole and probation. First of all, probation is that form of a criminal sentence without having to serve time. The offender remains in the setting of a community instead of serving time in prison. On the other hand, parole is an early supervised release from jail. An individual serves jail time for a while and before their jail time is over, they are released either permanently or temporary if they promise to be of good behavior. It allows a high level of flexibility in the handling of various criminal offenders. It permits the judges to make decisions about the ability of an individual to function in a society. It is also a system where an individual is given a second chance to change and allows individuals to redeem themselves. It still represents an incursion that the state undertakes on individuals. The system has also been criticized by too many people on it thus being seen as detrimental to societies and individuals. It also criticized to give prisoners freedom when they should be in jail. Parolee might repeat the offenses he was incarcerated for. The inability of the parolee to survive due to lack of employment or a home. It also requires frequently involvement by the criminal justice for a period of time. One case that impacted on probation and parole was a case of Gagnon V. Scarpelli in 1973. He was serving a probation sentence for armed robbery in the state of Wisconsin.

The Decade of the Decline of the Balance of Power Essay

The Decade of the Decline of the Balance of Power - Essay Example It is the democratic situation of the nation that has contributed to this situation as cases like the Executive and the Congress holding different positions such as receiving support from opposing political parties. The privilege doctrine of these branches of the government have proved to be timely and challenging to the judicial branch. Power allocation between coequal and separate government branches has been a major challenge in the last decade in United States. Such power gridlocks have forced the Supreme Court to step in many situations in order to resolve some of the disputes between the different government branches. When it comes to the balance of power between the White house and the Congress, the result is normally a political battle mainly regarding the law thus making such conflicts to spill over to the Supreme Court (Elliot, 2007). The power conflicts among the separate and coequal branches of the government are unavoidable especially in this decade that has been marked by partisan conflicts that have been heightened. The American constitution defines the different powers given to the existing branches of the government but lives some clauses undefined when it comes to the powers dedicated to the government branches thus. This situation is what results to the misunderstandings in the interpretation of the constitution as a means of defining the power balances. For example, the Congress is vested with the power to oversee the activities of the Executive by the constitution in the formulation of its legislation and the appropriation of funds for the executive operations. The imbalance arises when the Executive is also given the power by the same constitution to withhold some of its information regarding its duties as per the constitution. This is because the disclosure of some of the information to the Congress and the entire nation would work against the interests of the nation. However, the constitution still expects the government branches to provide other necessary information without limits. The doctrine of Executive and the Congress are mandated to shield and sought information that are sensitive from disclosure for the sake of the interest of the nation but at the same time making sure that the remainder is disclosed. The consequent of this is that the government branches conflicts force the Supreme Court to reconsider its executive privilege doctrine thus exploring constitutional waters that were unexplored. The last decade has seen a President coming from a party that is different from the party held by the Congress. This scenario has led to unbalanced power between the two resulting to the many conflicts witnessed as a result of the power shifts. The end result is the diminishing of the constitutional concept of the government’s co equal branches (Bickel, 1990). The Suprem e Court is left with the responsibility of resolving such conflicts presented before as stated in the

Future of Human Rights Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Future of Human Rights - Essay Example The significance of the influence presented by the rise and continuing growth of these countries stems from the assertion that social, economic and political power play a vital role in comprehending human rights concept and its corresponding international regime. The emergence and growth of the BRICS countries has implications on human rights since social, economic and political power is shifting from the western states to non-western states. Such power shift generates divergent understanding of political legitimacy and morality hence development of a new world order goes beyond the notion of the dominance of western states. This paper investigates the future of human rights. State sovereignty relates to the continuing tensions between human rights regimes’ foundational principles and their role in contemporary world typified by preferences, values, power and ideas diffusion. The concept of human rights in the 20th century was all about relationship between the state and its citizens (the ruler and the ruled) and that the states’ external legitimacy in the global arena was shaped by the political order of its constituent domestic societies. This model has since changed in â€Å"modern† decades owing to the increased implications of weak states to adequately protect human rights; growing interdependencies; and emergence of the global community having settled norms (Engstrom, 2010). These arguments have changed sovereignty from entailing only power to a concept involving responsibility too. Several bodies and organizations have been established to uphold protection of human rights across the world beyond the â€Å"sovereignty† o f states that is such bodies can intervene, with military deployment as the last resort, if the state fails to respect human rights. The second theme concerns the implication of a global system

Discern the legal realtionships between landlords and tenants Essay

Discern the legal realtionships between landlords and tenants - Essay Example States normally ask for notices when a tenant decides to evict, vacate, repair or lease violations/charges (Maillard, 2008). The aim of these requirements is to form written records of fees, requests and events associated with the property that might cater as evidence in a court of law. When a tenant or the person, who has rented the house, dies any funds owed between the landlord and the tenant has to be determined by the tenants estate. Estate matters are settled through probate. This refers to the legal or lawful procedure through which a dead persons property is settled, as well as transferred, to new owners (Maillard, 2008). The Landlord and Tenant probate laws differ in different states. Therefore, when such a case arises, it is essential to talk to a lawyer in your state when you need legal advice regarding rents when a tenant dies (Maillard, 2008). In this matter of Ann, Ted should refund Ann’s security to her designated representative. Even though, the rule of probate differs in almost every state, in the United Sates, this is the universal reference in case such a matter

How graphic design and skateboard graphics coincide and have Essay

How graphic design and skateboard graphics coincide and have influenced the growth in skateboarding since the 70's - Essay Example consisting of roller-skate wheels attached to a two by four; once the push bar of the scooter-like contraption was broken off, skateboarding was born’ (Skateboarding History, 2007). Through the years, skateboarding has been developed extensively especially as of the shape and the size of the skateboards. Moreover, graphics were added on skateboards presenting figures of all types (always in accordance with the cultural and social trends of a specific period). Current paper examines the relation of skateboarding with graphic design. The influence of the latter to the development of the former especially after the period of 1970s is the main issue analyzed in this paper. In order for the above relationship to be clearer, it is necessary to present the history of skateboarding from its appearance (approximately in 1959) until today. At the same time, it would be useful to refer to the development of graphic design throughout the years especially in relation with skateboarding. Th e views of professionals in the specific area have been also considered to be a valuable tool towards the understanding of the role of graphic design in the development of skateboarding since the 70s. The historical development of skateboarding has not been continuous. The period that characterized by a high growth of this activity is 1970s. In fact, it was during that period that the first skatepark appeared while skateboarding was extensively advertised in the television and the cinema. Moreover, new styles of skateboarding were adopted like slalom and freestyle. Regarding the developments in skateboarding that took place in the above period it is noticed that ‘this was the first time skateboarding had stars, some of the first really big names being Tony Alva, Jay Adams and Stacy Peralta; the look of skateboards also changed from being six to seven inches in width to over nine inches, providing better stability on vertical surfaces’ (Scateboarding History, 2007). In the above context,

The impact of this corporate greed has wide implications that hit average Americans in the form of unemployment, and exhausted retirement savings. During this time of organizational crises, corporate credibility is at an all time low and public doubts have spread over into investment market. This situation made it necessary to restore public confidence and trust that public relations professional can adequately provide. Public relations therefore play an important role in restoring public and confidence and trust in corporate world. Keywords: Crises, scandal, greed, credibility, doubts, market, confidence Synonyms, related terms: Crises– dilemma; related terms:   problems, Corporate scandal – Business organization’s disgrace; related terms: Company issues, negative organizational comment Corporate greed – business organization’s greediness for profit; related terms: Corruption, fraudulent, bribery Corporate credibility – business organization’s integrity, related terms:   Honesty, credibility, reliability, and uprightness Public doubts – public suspicions; related terms: fears, uncertainties, worries Investment market – Potential business, related terms: business enterprise, business venture Public confidence – public trust; related terms: patronage, loyalty Search statements: Three statements that will be the basis of this research are as follow: 1. Public Relations are a position in a company that does make over to enhanced company refutation. 2. Public Relations help companies gain positive corporate image 3. Public relations is a set of management, supervisory, and technical function The question above gives a particular significance on Public Relations particularly when a certain business organization, or when somebody in a high place wanted to have some make over of his reputation. Public relation is all about relating or communicating to the public a relationship that is largely mediated by the press. According to an article published by the University of Texas in Austin entitled Career Opportunities in Public Relations Public Relations as an agency, communicates the message to the press rather than directly to the particular target. The objective of PR according to the article is to use the Media in order to create a very powerful message or to be able to project a good image in the eyes of the public (Communication Career Service). Public relations work in the corporations, among individual and other organizations with messages to communicate. However, David W. Guth author (95) of Organizational Crises Experience and Public Relations Roles cited Scott M. Cutlip, Allen H. center, and Glen M. Groom four –pronged model of public relations roles: the expert- prescriber (or the definer of problems and implementor of solutions), the communication facilitator (or the mediator concerned with maintaining two-way communications),   the communication technician (or the non-manager concerned with preparation of communications), and the problem-solving process facilitator (or the Collaborator with other managers in defining and solving problems (Guth, F. 1995, p.4) Based on the above models of Public Relations, it is no wonder that Public relations play an important role in crises management. The expert prescriber or the definers of problems and the implementers of solution are the very public relations model that addressed management crises in business organization. Guth also cited a similar model developed by James Grunig and Todd T. Hunt that reinforce public relations a function of the organization and its environment. The four models of public relations served to either to make over of one’s image, or to enhance company refutation. 2. Public relations help companies gained positive corporate image. The University of Texas in Austin article pointed out that, an â€Å"in-house† public relation’s department is responsible with the corporate image and identity. The PR facilitates everything about the company relations and dealings particularly with the media and other stakeholders of the company. The PR department arranges every thing, from product marketing communication, sending out press releases to the media, and cultivating congenial relationships. Hugh M. Culbertson and Ni Chen explain (1996) that public relations are â€Å"a bit of everything which promotes and helps a smooth functioning of the organization† (p. 183). Culbertson and Chen emphasized those public relations connections to marketing have identified PR to help build product identification with the company. Thus, Culbertson and Chen cited that most senior executives and practitioner identified public relations as, â€Å"an effort, to build and maintain the positive image of the organization† (p. 184). Public relations practitioners in today’s changing and confrontational era are expected to plan for, and manage corporate crises. Public relations have evolved from being a mere message carrier to accommodating, listening to public, assessing their needs, demands and expectations, and resolving conflict between groups. 3. Public Relations are a set of management, supervisory and technical function. The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) cited in their paper a popular publication that offered explanation that Public Relations is a management function that assess public attitudes, categorizes the policies and procedures of an individual or organization with the public interest, and plans, and implement a program of action to earn public understanding and acceptance. It is quite apparent that the scope of Public Relations encompassed the whole of a business organization from trouble shooting of the management crises to product identification with the company, down to building positive image of the company. The PRSA noted that today, public relations profession are being sought after not just for roles in developing improved relationship with multi cultural communities, but also for skills and public relation function that affects all sections of society. The PRSA article aptly stated that the functions of Public Relations today take many forms in various organizations, including titles such as public information, public affairs, investor relations, corporate communications, marketing communications, corporate affairs, marketing or product publicity, and consumer service or customer relations (Miller, D. Ford, R.., 2003, p. 2). According to Miller and Ford, seasoned public relations practitioners often carry the title of vice presidents with salaries from $75, 000 to $200,000. Because public relations practitioners are engaged in multiple functions, they tend to be well paid. The salary survey 2003 reveals that the average beginning salary in public relations for a newly hired with baccalaureate degree is between $35, 324- 36,667. The task that a public relations practitioner includes analyzing, issues, problems, and opportunities, defining goals and so forth which can be compared to managerial, supervisory, and technical functions. Over all, Public Relations are important components not only of business organizations but also of rich and famous who wanted to project their better side before the public eye. The Public Relations is the troubleshooter during when there is crises management, and the endorser of new products in order for it to be identified with the marketing company.   Public Relations role in the business society benefits not only corporate owners and those that have the need to polish their image before the public but the practitioners as public relations is fast becoming an industry of its own although currently there is misunderstanding between the difference of the role of marketing and public relations. Erica Austin and Bruce Pinkleton (2006) noted that public relations strive hard to help organizations develop and preserve the variety and relationship that ensure the long-term success.

Dance, the Art of Movement Essay Example for Free

Dance, the Art of Movement Essay Dancing is the rhythmical movement of the body, usually with music, to express an idea or emotion, to narrate a story or simply to enjoy and take pleasure in the movement itself. It can be traced that Dance as an art started from the moment it was harnessed to a rhythm, probably the stamping of the feet and clapping of the hands. Dance of the earliest times differ from those of the present times; the dances of the barrio folks differ from those of the city. There are primitive and non primitive dances. Indians dance to give thanks for a harvest, the Mexicans to celebrate a religious festival, teenagers dance at parties, both young and old go discoing and children everywhere dance because it is pleasurable to express joy through bodily movement or language. Origin and Function of the Dance Dancing has primitive beginnings. It can be deduced from the behavior of primitive tribes surviving today that the rhythm that spurred on the dances mostly came from the beat sustained through the stamping of the feet on the ground. Soon, dance was used for purposes of affecting the whole tribe; hunting dance to depict the capture or a prey or a warlike dance to show the defeat of enemy. There were dances of thanksgiving for a good harvest, good weather and wanted rain. Rain dances have survived in some parts of the world until today. In biblical dances, the Old Testament attests that Miriam, the sister of Moses, led the women in a dances of joy after Israelites escaped from Egypt. King David danced before the Ark of the Covenant to express thanksgiving. Psalm 149 says, â€Å"Let them praise HIS name in the dance. † The Bible tells us when people danced, but it does not tell how they danced. The Hebrew religion forbade the making of images. Thus there are no paintings or statues to help reconstruct the dances of Miriam or David. In earlier times, supplications t Gods was the beginning of the religious aspect of dancing. In the West, the most sophisticated of professional dancers put their art at the service of religion taking part in celebrations in great cathedrals or in humble churches. It is believed that the more grotesque kinds of dancing in plays and spectacles were developed by the Romans. In the East as well as in the West, dancing was developed as a social grace. Various kinds of religious, social and theatrical dances evolved slowly in the dances today. Generally, western dance techniques are based mostly on footwork, while the Eastern forms of art dance, depending upon footwork to sustain the rhythm, derive their greatest beauty and subtle meanings from the infinite variety of delicate movements of the upper part of the body, especially the head, neck and hands. In the East as in the West, dance was indigenous to religious ceremony, and was used for entertainment. Plato, the great Greek Philosopher demanded a place for the dance in his ‘’ideal republic’’ saying that it would help towards acquiring noble, harmonious and graceful attitudes. The implication is that dance was already appreciated for its own sake, as an expression of beauty and movement. The domination of the Roman Catholic Church in Europe, after the fall of Rome, virtually extinguished theatrical dance, but it was reborn together with other art of Italy.

The Gothic Theme In Frankenstein Essays -- essays research papers

The term Gothic refers to a genre that came about in the late eighteenth century. It can be a type of story, clothing, or music nowadays. In this paper it will refer to a style of literature. A very good example of this type of literature is Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. There is a sense of foreboding throughout the whole novel, which is one of the basic necessities of the Gothic. This theme of the Gothic has different characteristics that all fit into the story of Victor Frankenstein and his monster and make this one of the first horror stories every told. The very first characteristic of a Gothic novel is its sinister setting. The opening sentence in Frankenstein sets the mood for the rest of the book. Shelley begins her novel with, "You will rejoice to hear that no disaster has accompanied the commencement of an enterprise which you have regarded with such evil forebodings" (p. 13). At this point in the novel, Walton is on a ship in the middle of the North Pacific Ocean, on his way to the North Pole. He is being blocked from all sides by ice, and can see nothing but ice for miles. The landscape is barren, and all of his crew is in fear of running out of food and fresh water. This setting is very sinister in lieu of the imminent death that is facing the crew members. When the scene switches to the life of Victor Frankenstein, the reader finds out that everything is wonderful throughout his childhood. Later, when he goes away to college in pursuit of knowledge about alchemy and other sciences, everything gets darker and darker. When construction of the creature begins, Victor describes his workshop as "a solitary chamber, or rather cell, at the top of the house, and separated from all the other apartments by a gallery and staircase. This is where [he] kept [his] workshop of filthy creation" (p. 53). He goes on to describe the "dissecting room" and "slaughter-house" that provided his material (p.53). This, too, adds to the sinister setting and evil undertones of the novel. The setting also serves the purpose of reflecting the feelings of the characters in the novel. Whenever Frankenstein is upset or someone is going to jail, it is raining. A Gothic novel would not be complete without a lot of rain. ... ...to Frankenstein ends up dying and even Walton is in danger of being killed if he stays out to sea too long. Death, darkness, rain, and horror are all needed to make a good Gothic novel. Not only did Mary Shelly include all these things, she added a few to make the story even more interesting. Her novel meets all the characteristics for a work of Gothic fiction. As Malamund mentions, "Shelley's monster [is] at home amid the Gothic, and [is] able to march forward--undaunted by the landscape of terror" (p.45). WORKS CONSULTED Crowell, Thomas Y., et al. Slaughterhouse-Five :: Literary Analysis, Kurt Vonnegut

Slaughterhouse-Five, by Kurt Vonnegut was an anti-war book about the bombing of Dresden. The main theme of the book seemed to be fate, or that nobody has free will. Throughout the book, Billy, is randomly traveling in time. Whenever he has the opportunity to make a choice that would seem like the right, or intelligent thing to do, he does not, as he does not have the free will to make that choice. This also leads to Billy not caring about many things, knowing they will happen no matter what anybody does. As explained on the planet of Tralfamadore, Billy can not make any choices. The Tralfamadorians tell him that he lacks free will, saying "Only on Earth is there talk of free will" (109). One of the Tralfamadorians also said they were "trapped in another blob of amber" (108), referring to the fact that neither he or Billy can change anything in life, and that everything has been, is, and will be the same. The Tralfamadorians also know how the end of the universe will come. They will be testing their rocket fuel, and it will fail and destroy the entire universe. When Billy hears this, he asks "isn't there some way you can prevent it?" (149). The Tralfamadorians tell him that they cannot change it, as the pilot has always done it, and always will do it. This is likely when Billy finally loses all belief in the idea of free will. A main example of fate would be when Billy is on an airplane. In Slaughterhouse-Five, it states that "Billy, knowing the plane was going to crash pretty soon, closed his eyes, traveled in time back to 1944" (198). Soon after, "the plane smacked into the top of Sugarbush Mountain in Vermont. Everyone was killed but Billy and the copilot" (199). Instead of doing anything about it, Billy just waits for the plane to crash. If Billy had free will, he would have tried to warn the others on the plane, or not gotten onto it at all. Another good example of the lack of free will would be when Billy is about to die. Normally, someone would care about their death, but Billy does not. He locks up a tape in a safe-deposit box, saying "I, Billy Pilgrim, will die, have died, and always will die on February thirteenth" (180). Before he dies, he is giving a speech, and he knows that he will be assassinated.

weapons of the weak :: essays research papers

In James Scott’s novel Weapons of the Weak: Everyday Forms of Peasant Resistance he plainly describes what can only be viewed as the worsening of the lives of the village poor in Sedaka, Malaysia. He attributes the increase in economic inequality to Malaysia’s green revolution. Consequently, Scott analyzes the impact of these changes on the poor, sighting several causes.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The green revolution began in the 1970’s in Malaysia. It was brought about by an advance in technology, a new form of high yielding seeds. These new seeds led to the ability to double crop, or have more than one crop yield per season. Also, many of the large farmers opted to bring in combine harvesters to increase the speed at which they could harvest, making it easier for them to double crop. These new technologies may seem economically beneficial to all if viewed by the untrained observer. However, those who benefited were few. These new developments only benefited the wealthiest in society, consequently leaving the poor even poorer for many reasons.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  More than anything the combine harvesters led to the increased troubles of Sedaka’s poor. â€Å"Combine harvesting has meant, then, a loss of nearly half the wages previously received for paddy work by the poorer strata of Muda’s peasantry (76)†. Combine harvesters were valued by many large farmers as brilliant new technology. It allowed for them to eliminate the need of a labor force for cutting and threshing. â€Å"By the irrigated season of 1979 †¦ they (combine harvesters) were harvesting fully 60 percent of Sedaka’s patty land. A year later they were harvesting more than 80 percent (115)†. Transplanting was the only work left for patty workers in Sedaka. Thus a problem presented itself for the one-quarter of Sedaka’s population who subsisted solely from wage labor. Combine harvesters also allowed for large farmers to take up the practice of broadcasting, which took work away from those who helped with the pre-season planting. The lack of work led to a decrease in the need for laborers. Since there was less demand for laborers, the price of wages went down. This greatly affected those who did not have enough land to provide year round subsistence for their families. This group of poor who farmed less than 3 relong, in other words those considered below the poverty level, had to struggle to survive. Some peasants had to move temporarily or permanently to larger cities to find work to provide for their families.

Islam Invasion of India in 1200-1700 72103725 Essay

The historical excerpt of India draws its genesis from the Indus Valley civilization which mushroomed in the North-Western part of the sub-continent as early as 3300 towards 1700BCE. Rashid Barrack (1999). This era was popularly known for Bronze and the subsequent Iron Age. Historians concur with the fact that this is the period that triggered the massive uprising of pinnacle kingdoms otherwise known as Mahajanapadas from 700–300 BCE. Rashid Barrack (1999). The scramble and partition and economic influence were a dreaded disease on the global scale before the papacy age; this affected almost all societies in the historical context. India like other societies in history was vulnerable to the Islamic invasion. The scramble for India began one century after the death of Mohammed, during this period Arabs advanced into the deep most parts of India where they settled at the Indus valley. Most of these successive raids were affected by Mahmud who had the main objective of controlling the wealth of India. They took over the Indian home turf Delhi by 12th century. Apart from the Islamic vested interest in India, other tribes from Persia and Central Asia also were seen as potential invaders into this sub-continent. Chirac. R (2000). Immediately the Sassanids succumbed, the consequent entourage of the Caliphate’s that welded enormous power and subsequently saw to its monopolistic dominion, It gave rise to Muslim dynasties of Asian heritage, which consisted of the Turks. Chirac. R (2000) Expansion of trade One of the impeccable reasons Islam expanded to India was strictly for economic reasons. The Muslims came in contact with India through the Arab invasion on a nest of pirates near neo-Bombay. Muslims enhanced their dominance in both accumulating the economic power and enhancing religion through a comprehensive structure that fused the political power, law and religion. This was meant to safeguard their vested interest. This prompted a massive expansion of world trade far beyond in the medieval era. Free trade was vividly enhanced by Sher Shah Suri who bunned all trade tariffs. Large infrastructures were built and by (1540-1544) Grand Trunk Road was built to create a conduit between Calcutta through to Kabul. Chitendra Sonigra (1997). This was prompted by the curiosity to secure trade empires along the Arabian Sea. During this period in time many Arabs settled at the Indian ports, prompting a transcendental increase of minute Muslim communities along the Indian costal line. Communities spontaneously occupied these regions, where they were used as mercenaries by most Hindu kings that hailed from the south. Chitendra Sonigra (1997). A fundamental aspect of the Muslim period in world history was the emergence of Islamic Sharia courts capable of imposing a common commercial and legal system that extended from Morocco in the West to Mongolia in the North East and Indonesia in the South East. Critically the imposition of the common commercial strictures was meant to facilitate the ease of operation in the region as the Islam looted the economy. Chitendra Sonigra (1997). While southern India was already in trade with Arabs/Muslims, northern India found new opportunities. Islamic forces become so tactical and designed common legal framework that subjugates the Hindu kingdoms. The adoption of the Sharia laws was an integral era in the history of Islam that enhanced the imposition of trading tariffs. The Sharia incorporated business conduits that favored both the Muslims and the Kaffirs. Hadley M. (1970). The marshaled out an economic annexing stratagem by clinging on a system that was rounded between the clergy, the administrative and the mercantile classes. This system granted them ease in terms of navigating potential territories in the sub-content. The Islamic legion was clever in that they established a political embodiment that amalgamated both the law and religion in order to safeguard and dominate on the economic spheres. As a consequent, Bengal was taken over and the central India by the Delhi Sultanate, empires like the Turko-Afghan reigned from Delhi: the Mamluk ruled during 1211-1290; the Khalji ruled 12-90-1320: the Tughlaq ruled from 1320-1413 the Sayyid (1414-51) while the Lodhi ruled from 1451-1526. Hadley M. (1970). The Islamic hegemony also eyed the Southern kingdom where futile resistance was marshaled up by Vijayanagar until the tumbling down of the Sultanate Empire in 1565. Rashid Barrack (1999). This resulted into the expansion of international trade, in all spheres of the sub-continent. Chitendra Sonigra (1997). While it is evident that during this era a section of leaders were overzealous about spreading Islam and varied sections inclined to the Akbar dynasty was liberal in founding a more harmonious religion. The economic aspect was championed through the massive empire uprising such as the Mughal dynasty in 1526–1707, that domineered India for 200 years: the Mughal annexed so much wealth that made them so rich. Hadley M. (1970). The Islamic intrusion in India was categorically for economic reasons; this was achieved through the expansion of slave territories and the exploitation gun powder. After the death of Auranzeb’s death, the dominance of Muslim subsided, this was followed by the successive imperialistic and provincial hereditary powers was coupled with intrigue and force. After a short while mansabdari system gave birth to the zamindari system where aristocratic structures of government collected rents. Hadley M. (1970). Technology Expansion The expansive international trade during these wee years enhanced the transportation of industrial technology and urban ethical paradigm shift. Although the Indian sub-continent had a rich intellectual culture that was more advanced, the water-wheel technology for irrigation was imported during the Muslim period of invasion. Architectural designs such as those ones of the ceramic tiles that was dominant in Iraq and Iran was also transported by the mughal rulers. These designs gave Arabs a bargaining ground and they enhanced their economic mission under the pretext of ushering foreign technology. Hadley M. (1970). Cultural influence To enhance prolific dominance on the Indian subcontinent, the Islam had to incorporate the divide and rule philosophy that polarized the sub-continental psyche, which complicated issues majority of settled agrarian societies of India during this time. The Muslim’s however did not adopt the Indian mores and values; they instead retained their identity and fronted legal cum administrative structures that outrun the mainstream systems. The fundamental effect of Islam on the Indian culture influenced the evolution of all spheres of human endeavor; this includes language, dress, cuisine, architectural development and also the social and cultural values. The Muslim reign witnessed a magnificent urbanization of India and the spontaneous mushrooming of many cities and their urban mores. There was bit of language modification that was as a result of Muslim invasion. Since the Islam was a key player in the transatlantic trade the monetary factor was a major consideration in welding dominance in India, they however, extended their trade conduits that spread from Morocco through to Indonesia. This change of emphasis on mercantilism and trade from the more strongly centralized governance systems further clashed with the agricultural based traditional economy and also provided fuel for social and political tensions. Rashid Barrack (1999).

Examine the overtones of Gothic horror in Edgar Allen Poe’s tale The Fall of the House of Usher Essay

The Gothic genre is an face genre that was most popular in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is character referenceised by an atmosphere of riddle and bane. In sight for a overbold or poem to be considered as Gothic, it must hold some of the vital ingredients of the chivalric genre. These characteristics include- the map of the supernatural (ghosts/spirits etc), white plague of unilluminated and vast imagery, the theme of revenge ( nonably, the at peace(predicate) seeking on the dotice), and a backbone of forewarning (giving a hint of whats to survey later). The expire of the manse of depict, by Edgar Allen Poe, can be delimitd as a Gothic refreshing in that it demonstrates many black letter characteristics, specific solelyy in terms of setting and character. In black letter unexampleds, the setting of a haunted theatre of operations or fastness is often utilise. It is usu eachy an old, temperamental and decaying castle plagued by a excommuni cate. The motif of a haunted contribute is practised prominently in the The Fall of the Ho affair of Usher, and indeed the castle is the main setting of the story, and the centre of activity. From the start, we compose awargon of the dark and unadulterated nature of the stomach, as the unnamed vote counter provides us with his first impressions. He informs us I k immediately not how it was but, with the first glance of the building, a sense of insufferable moroseness pervaded my spirit. This immediately fills us with a sense of foreboding. We get the impression that all is not well in the Ho make uptake of of Usher. In light of this, the exercise of descriptive setting in the gothic novel is a vital tool apply to create a sense of mystery and tension. This is especially achieved done the frequent use of negative adjectives such as dreary, desolate, insufferable and decayed. The use of foreboding is used frequently in the gothic novel. This involves providing the lecture r with subtle hints of what is going to happen. galore(postnominal) novels use descriptive settings to create this sense of doom. The Fall of the House of Usher is no exception as the ratifier is bombarded with sinister images of the crumbling condition of the individual stones. This use of the member crumbling, prep ars us for the domiciliates and the familys eventual hazard the marks name is Usher it makes it hard for the reader to recognise the both as different. So when the storyteller describes the house as crumbling this is in any case refers to the state of the family. Because of this use of foreboding, the gothic novel is often criticised for its utterly predictable nature.Interestingly, the unnamed storyteller describes the house (an inanimate object), as having lifelike attributes, for guinea pig he describes the vacant eyelike windows. This use of psycheification helps to create a monster-like impression. As a result, the readers already strong business organ ization of the setting becomes stronger. We get the impression that the house itself will generate any terror that is to follow.Descriptions of the houses interior used when the narrator ventures into the house for the first date describes many secret passageways sombre tapestries and the non-white oaken floor. This frequent use of the colour black is also an unequivocal attribute to the gothic genre.Another favorite(a) horror device of the gothic novel finds a person trapped, for example, being mysterious away in a dark cell. This is discernible in Poes tosh as disgustedeline is buried alive in a coffin- this is the ultimate entrapment. When talking of the coffin in which skirt Madeleine was en tombed in they describe it as small, damp and entirely without subject matter of admission for light lying at great depth. This use of toil helps to achieve an almost suffocating solvent and is extremely effective in creating solicitude on the readers part. Now I am going to di scuss Poes use of character in the tale, and examine how it adheres to the gothic genre.Characters in the gothic novel atomic number 18 often very strange and eccentric. This is evident throughout when the narrator describes RodericksMad hilarity in his eyes when Madeleine breaks from her tomb and his intricate song of imaginary things he seems to be in his own origination and distances himself from the narrator and therefore the reader. The unnamed narrators descriptions of Roderick and Madelines physical attributes also helps to create this sense of eccentricity, for example he describes Rodericks peculiar physical conformation. They be described as quite an sallow watching creatures with ghastly pallor of trim and unheeded hair. This strangeness of character deems Roderick and Madeline alien to the reader. It is these little eccentricities that stops the reader relating to the characters, fashioning them seem more distant. As a result of this Madeline and Roderick become s hivery to the reader because as human beings we argon instinctively scared of what we do not understand. The setting seems almost cursed with a depression that affects the unnamed narrator as it already has Roderick and Madeleine. The narrators consentaneous personality is affected at just the sight of the house An air of stern, deep, and wicked gloom hung over and pervaded all. The characters all share the olfactory perceptioning of desolate lonesomeness even when they are all unitedly this implies the house alters the relationship of the characters. The loneliness is signised by the size of the house its vastness is a metaphor for the emotional distance amongst the characters.DOPPELGANGERIn terms of character, the relationship between Roderick and Madeline is highly important. They can be considered as manifolds that is a frequent symbol of the gothic or horror novel and film. I argue that Poe was using Madeleine to patch up the evil in Roderick this is what causes Roderick to bury her seek to suppress the evil in him, that he is unsuccessful as she breaks through the coffin, this shows that we cannot suppress evil inside us. This itself is a horrific idea.I am now going to examine the use of the double in the story. How are Madeline and Roderick usher standardised? There are many examples- for example-As Roderick and Madeline are identical twins they obviously look very alike, they both suffer operose illnesses which affect there daily lives making them house bound this is interesting as they are spending so such(prenominal) metre in the house the houses curse seems to affect them greatly even leading(a) to their eventual death The fact that lady Madeline and Roderick die at the same time could be caused by the fact the the great unwashed believe that twins can feel what the other is feeling be that mentally or psychically. But there are many examples of them being opposites Roderick is male and Madeline is pistillate she is strong hes debil e this is interesting as it contradicts my original theory. believe QUOTES.In conclusion toEdgar Allen Poes use of the typical traits of the gothic genre is rather obviously used in the derive of the house of usher. These overtones seem to add a sense of the unknow to the novel although gothic or horror novels are known for their predictability it is used effectively making the reader feel isolated from Roderick and Madeleine and closer to the narrator this is interesting as the reader rattling knows more about the usher family than the narrator which usually causes the reader to support the person they know more about.
